How It Began
Moving Forward was actually born of a family crisis. In early 2004, I received the phone call I had been dreading. My father had only a short time left to live.
I went to work one more day to make sure my software projects were covered and, as fate would have it, that was lay off day. I was on the list this time.
This was an additional shock. But it was also a blessing in disguise, because now I was free to travel back to Virginia and be with my parents for as long as they needed me.
I spent two good weeks with my father. His biggest concern was what would happen to my mother after he passed on.
He had already selected a retirement community for her to move to, but he knew he wouldn’t live long enough to coach her through the move. Of course, I assured him that I would stay as long as it took to get her moved and settled.
You promise this kind of thing in a moment of passion. Once you get into the project, that’s when you realize just how much you committed to do.
My parents lived in that house for 40 years. They had 5 bedrooms, 2 attics, and a full basement filled with china, crystal, antiques, artwork and books. Down in the basement I even found my old aquarium from back in the seventh grade! What were we going to do with it all? Where would we even start?
Somehow, I got my mother moved and the house emptied, but it took almost 3 months to do it. By the end, I had learned so much that I wished I could do it over again and this time do it the “right” way. I did about three times more work than I needed to do. I was also lucky and didn’t lose any money in the process. However, I sure could have lost money because, back then, I didn’t know what scams to watch out for, the most cost effective methods for completing a move, or the most profitable methods for selling the excess possessions.
When I finally returned to Washington state, I decided to start a business helping other families get through the process of moving and downsizing more easily.
I had never run a business before, but I just knew I had to do this. And so Moving Forward Inc. began! It’s been very rewarding. I love what I do, and I love being able to hire other deeply compassionate people to join the Moving Forward mission.
