Is 2012 the End of the World By the Mayan Calendar?

You may have heard that the Mayan Calendar predicts the end of the world in the year 2012.  The exact date that apocalypse enthusiasts cite is our next winter solstice, December 21, 2012.  As my charming husband is a direct descendent of the Mayan Indians (who still inhabit the mountains of Guatemala), this topic has received great attention in our household.

And the results are in!  Scholars agree that the Mayan calendar, while being very complex and well developed, simply runs out of names for years after 2012.

What does that mean to you?

No apocalypse!  The very advanced mathematical thinkers of the Mayan Civilization did NOT predict the end of the world for 2012.

Perhaps we could invent some new names for years to calm the fears of the apocalypsaphobics.

I’m thinking that I would name them for things that have become central to our current lifestyles, such as Wheel Year, Electricity Year … maybe even Telephone Year.   Help me out here, What would you name upcoming years?

Wishing You and Those You Love

A Happy New Year!
