How Can Senior Placement Services Help You?
“Determining Which Retirement Home Was Right for Joan”
– By Sara Shelton, M.S. Gerontology
As a guest on the Moving Forward blog, I would like to introduce you to Seattle Aging Solutions and the services I offer to families throughout the Greater Seattle area.
The process of researching and touring retirement homes and communities can be a daunting process, particularly when a health crisis requires that decisions must be made quickly. As a Gerontologist and Eldercare Consultant, I launched Seattle Aging Solutions in 2009 to offer clients a highly personalized approach to exploring eldercare options and retirement homes.
It takes time to find the right retirement home for your loved one.
Over the past few months, I had the pleasure of assisting Sharon and Cal (all names have been changed) in exploring retirement homes and communities for Sharon’s mom, Joan. She had been living alone in the home she owned for many years, was no longer driving, and was beginning to experience some short-term memory loss. I initially met with Sharon and Cal at their home to get a better understanding of Joan’s current situation, her finances and the family’s preferences for location.
The following week, I met the two of them at Joan’s home and we discussed the idea of moving, which was very distressing to Joan. She cherished an independent lifestyle and her familiar surroundings. When our conversation was over, however, she agreed to visit two communities after Sharon and Cal had narrowed down the options. After touring three communities with me, Sharon and Cal decided on two options and we returned to each of them for dinner with Joan. Weighing the pros and cons of each community, Joan selected Fairwinds – Brittany Park in Woodinville, Washington and plans were made for the upcoming move.
Moving Forward Inc. helped make that move easier…
Fortunately, I was able to refer Sharon and Cal to Moving Forward for assistance. The Moving Forward staff supported Joan in the difficult process of deciding what she would take with her and what would be sold or disposed of later. They did all of the packing too.
On moving day a couple of weeks ago, Moving Forward arranged all of Joan’s belongings in her apartment while she stayed in a guest apartment at Brittany Park. When I visited Joan a week after the move, I learned that she was thrilled with her apartment and felt a new sense of independence.
As is so often the case, she shared with me that she wasn’t sure why she had been so opposed to the idea of moving in the first place!
It pays to call in the experts!
Just as you would hire a realtor for their expertise in the housing market or hire an attorney for their expertise in legal matters, working with an expert in the senior care industry is essential in making confident decisions. My goal is to make the process of selecting senior care options less stressful and a lot more fun through knowledge of the industry, compassion for my clients’ unique situations, and a sense of humor!
